What an eBay Linked Account Suspension Means for Your Other Account

eBay can restrict one account because of another. The multiple accounts policy says what travels, what is actually prohibited, and how to appeal a link eBay made in error.

eBay linked account suspension shown as two seller accounts joined by a broken link, one suspended and the other flagged for an account status check

The notice names an account you may never have heard of.

eBay has restricted your own account, and the reason it gives is a connection to another one.

An eBay linked account suspension is the one restriction you did not earn on the account it landed on.

eBay publishes the policy that governs this, and it contains a sentence most sellers never reach.

If you believe eBay linked your account in error, the policy tells you to contact eBay and appeal.

eBay publishes that route, and almost nobody uses it properly.

Key Takeaways

  • Having two accounts is not the offence. eBay states plainly that users may have multiple accounts.
  • Restrictions travel between linked accounts. eBay states that similar restrictions or limits may be applied to a member’s other linked accounts.
  • A wrongly linked account has its own appeal. The policy tells you to contact eBay and appeal if you believe it linked your account in error.
  • The policy forbids two separate things. Registering new accounts, and using other existing accounts, to dodge restrictions or limits.
  • The second half catches honest sellers. Trading on your healthy account while another sits restricted is the breach.
  • eBay states the order of operations. Bring accounts back into good standing before you buy or sell with other accounts.
  • Standards apply across every account you hold. eBay expects buyer and seller standards to be met on all of them.
  • A poor seller level can travel too. eBay states that if any account drops to Below Standard, all your accounts may be affected.
  • eBay does not publish its detection signals. Anyone naming the exact ones is guessing.
  • eBay sometimes invites linking. The selling limits process offers to link an established account of yours.
  • Two different appeals exist here. One disputes the link, the other disputes the restriction behind it.
  • Fix the restricted account first. It is the only sequence the policy actually supports.

What Is an eBay Linked Account Suspension?

It is a restriction applied to one account because of the state of another.

eBay sets this out in a single line of its using multiple accounts policy. If it applies restrictions or limits to one account, then similar restrictions or limits may be applied to the member’s other linked accounts.

eBay uses a second phrase for the same idea in its seller standards policy. It warns that eBay may place selling restrictions on your account and related accounts.

Note the word similar. The second account does not inherit the first one’s punishment automatically, and the outcomes are not always identical.

What does carry across is the problem itself.

Multiple accounts are fine, so the linking is not the offence

This is the part sellers get wrong first, and it changes what you should write.

Under the guidelines, eBay lists having multiple accounts as allowed. Its export guidance says the same thing more warmly, noting that you can register multiple accounts and that many members do.

So an appeal that argues you were entitled to a second account is answering a charge nobody made.

The charge is about what the accounts were used for.

What eBay does not publish

How it decides that two accounts belong together.

Sellers ask whether it is the IP address, the device, the payment method or the delivery address. No eBay help page lists those detection signals.

Search this topic and you will find confident answers about browser fingerprints, cookies and WebGL renderers. Check who wrote them. Companies selling anti detect browsers publish most of that content, and their product depends on the answer sounding frightening.

None of it cites eBay, because eBay has not said it.

You do not need the mechanism. You need the stated consequence and the stated remedy, and eBay publishes both.

The answer decides which appeal you write. Source: eBay using multiple accounts policy

Key point: the useful question is not how eBay found the link. It is whether the link is real, because that single answer decides which of two completely different appeals you should be writing.

Usually because the connection is real and old, rather than because the system invented it.

The account you forgot you had

A buying account from 2009 is still an account.

Sellers routinely register one to buy something, abandon it, and forget it exists. If it carries an unpaid item, an unresolved case or an old policy note, it is not dormant in the way you assumed.

Check every email address you have ever used before you tell eBay the link is wrong.

A shared household or a shared address

Two sellers at one address is an ordinary situation that produces an awkward one.

A partner, a family member or a flatmate selling from the same address is common, and so is a restriction landing on one of them. eBay’s published policy talks about a member’s own linked accounts rather than about households, so this scenario sits outside what the policy actually describes.

It is also the case where the error appeal matters most, because the two accounts genuinely belong to different people.

Business and personal overlap

One bank account, two eBay accounts, and a very clear connection.

Sellers who run a business account alongside a personal one often share a payment method, a phone number or a registered address between them. That is entirely permitted, and it also makes the pair trivially easy to associate.

Permitted and connected are not opposites here. Both can be true at once.

What the eBay Multiple Accounts Policy Prohibits

Two things, and the second one is the one that catches people who were not trying to cheat.

Under the not allowed heading, eBay names registering new accounts or using other existing accounts to avoid buying and selling restrictions or limits or other policy consequences.

Read the middle clause again. Using other existing accounts.

You do not have to open anything to breach this policy. An account you have held for a decade will do.

The sequence eBay actually asks for

The policy overview states it, and it reads as an instruction rather than a suggestion.

eBay says users are expected to resolve issues as they arise, and to follow the steps eBay provided to bring accounts back into good standing, before continuing to buy or sell with other accounts.

Before is doing the work in that sentence. You fix the restricted account first, and the healthy one waits.

Most linked account cases we see are sellers who did it the other way round, for entirely understandable reasons.

How an inherited restriction becomes an earned one1A restriction lands on your first account2You carry on trading on your second account3The policy reads that as avoidance4The second account is restricted too
Step two is the one you control. Source: eBay using multiple accounts policy

Step #1: Establish Which eBay Account Is Restricted

You cannot appeal a link until you know which end of it is the problem.

Open eBay Messages on every account you can still access and read the notice on each one. One of them will name a cause. The other will name a connection.

Whichever account names a cause is the one to fix. Its linked partner is downstream of that.

If both notices name a connection and neither names a cause, the restricted account is one you have not opened yet. That is the situation the error appeal exists for.

Step #2: Stop Trading on Your Other eBay Account

This is counterintuitive, and it is the single highest value move on the list.

Every order you take on the healthy account while the other sits restricted builds the exact record the policy prohibits. Continuing to trade is not neutral, and it is not evidence of good faith.

Fulfil what you have already sold, because abandoning buyers creates defects and cases on top of everything else.

Then stop listing until you have resolved the first account.

Worth knowing: pausing a healthy account feels like volunteering for a punishment nobody imposed. It is cheaper than the alternative, which is a second restriction that now has a documented reason behind it rather than an inherited one.

These are different submissions, and sending one when you needed the other is why most of these cases stall.

Your situationWhat you are disputingWhat you must show
The other account is not yoursThe link itselfThat you and the account holder are separate people
The other account is yours and restrictedThe underlying restrictionThat you resolved the original cause
The other account is yours and healthyNothing yetStandards apply to both, so fix the cause
You cannot identify the other accountThe link itselfThat eBay has associated you in error

Rows one and four use the route eBay publishes for exactly this. If you believe eBay linked your account in error, it says to contact eBay and appeal.

Separateness, in the details eBay can actually check.

  • Photo identification for the account holder, matching the registered name.
  • Proof of address in that same name, such as a recent bank statement.
  • A payment method registered to the account holder rather than to anyone else.
  • Business registration and a tax ID where the account trades as a company.
  • A plain statement of the relationship, if there is one, and what is separate about the two operations.

Do not claim there is no relationship when there is one at the same address. eBay can see the address, and an appeal the account record contradicts is worse than no appeal.

Say what the connection is and why it does not make the accounts one operation.

Step #4: Fix the eBay Account That Caused the Problem

Where the link is real, the linked restriction is a symptom and the original notice is the illness.

Whatever eBay told that first account to do is now the whole job. A verification request wants documents. An MC011 review wants receipts and supplier paperwork. A policy violation wants a plan of action with a root cause and a corrective action.

Clear that, and the reason for the second restriction stops existing.

Our guide to why most eBay appeals fail covers the submission itself, and the failure modes there apply here without modification.

Does a Linked Account Drag Down Your Seller Level?

It can, and eBay says so in terms that are easy to miss.

Its export guidance states that if any account drops the Below Standard seller level, all your accounts may be affected. The multiple accounts policy makes the same point from the other direction, expecting buyer and seller standards to be met across all your accounts.

So a neglected second store is not a harmless hobby. It is a metric attached to your main one.

If that is where you are, our guide to the transaction defect rate covers the metric that most often does the damage.

What Happens to Listings and Payouts on the Linked Account?

The money question arrives about an hour after the panic does.

eBay states that if you are a seller, your payouts may sit on hold until the restriction or suspension on your account is lifted. A linked restriction is still a restriction, so the balance on the second account can freeze alongside the first.

That catches sellers who assumed the second account was only losing its listings.

Fulfil what you already sold

Held funds are not a reason to abandon buyers.

Cancelling orders you cannot afford to post creates defects and cases, and those attach to the account you are trying to protect. Ship what you owe, upload the tracking, and let the delivery scans do their work.

We walk through the cash flow side of this in surviving an eBay payout hold, including which holds respond to anything you do.

The Linking eBay Actively Invites

Not every connection between your accounts is a liability, and one of them is a feature.

The selling limits process offers to raise your allowance by linking to another, more established account of yours. That is eBay asking you to connect accounts you already own.

Same mechanism, opposite intent. Linking on eBay’s invitation while everything is healthy is ordinary. Reaching for a second account after a restriction lands is the thing the policy names.

Timing and disclosure separate the two, and we cover the allowance side in raising eBay selling limits.

How Do You Keep Two eBay Accounts Genuinely Separate?

You build separation before you need it, because you cannot assert it afterwards.

Every seller who has had to prove two accounts are independent describes the same regret. The evidence they needed existed nowhere, because nobody had ever deliberately kept the two operations apart.

Give each account its own paperwork

One name, one address, one payment method, and no crossover.

A second account sharing a bank account with the first has only one story to tell. That story is that both belong to the same operation. Where two people genuinely trade from one address, register each account in its own name with its own payment details.

That costs nothing while everything is healthy, and it decides the case when it is not.

Do not sell the same stock

Shared inventory is the connection that survives every other separation.

Two accounts listing the same items, from the same supplier, at the same address, are one business. Whatever the registration details say, the trading pattern says otherwise.

Buy your own stock and keep your own invoices.

Tell eBay before it has to ask

The selling limits process gives you a route to disclose accounts you own.

Use it while both accounts are healthy. A connection you would otherwise have to explain becomes one eBay recorded for you. Disclosure ages well, and discovery does not.

Allowed Second eBay Account Versus a Linked Account Breach

The same two accounts can sit on either side of this line depending on when they were used.

SituationHow the policy reads it
Two accounts opened years apart, both healthyAllowed, standards apply to each
Second account linked on eBay’s invitation for limitsAllowed, and encouraged
Business and personal account sharing a bank accountAllowed, and easy to associate
Selling on account B while account A sits restrictedUsing other existing accounts to avoid consequences
New account registered after a restriction landsRegistering new accounts to avoid consequences

Nothing in the top three rows is a problem. Everything in the bottom two is the same policy, quoted twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean when eBay says your account is linked to another account?

It means eBay has associated your account with another one and applied consequences across both. The policy states that similar restrictions or limits may reach a member’s other linked accounts.

Can I appeal if eBay linked my account by mistake?

Yes, and eBay publishes that route directly. Its multiple accounts policy tells you to contact eBay and appeal if you believe it linked your account in error.

Does eBay ban by IP address?

eBay does not publish the signals it uses, so nobody outside eBay can answer that honestly. Treat any confident list of detection methods as marketing rather than policy.

My partner and I both sell from the same address. Is that allowed?

Nothing in the policy forbids it, since the policy permits multiple accounts and treats separate people as separate members. Keep the identification, payment methods and stock genuinely separate, because that is what an error appeal has to demonstrate later.

Can I keep selling on my other account while one is restricted?

No, and this is the mistake that converts an inherited restriction into an earned one. eBay expects accounts to be brought back into good standing before you continue buying or selling with other accounts.

How do I find out which account eBay has linked to mine?

Start with every email address you have ever registered, since forgotten buying accounts are the usual answer. Where the notice names nothing and you can find nothing, ask eBay directly as part of the error appeal.

Changing details after a restriction is the behaviour that looks like an attempt to circumvent it. It also leaves the original cause untouched, which is the thing actually holding both accounts.

Does a linked account affect my selling limits?

It can work in both directions. Limits may be applied across linked accounts, while the limits process separately offers to raise your allowance by linking an established account of your own.

Is a linked account restriction permanent?

Not inherently, because it exists as a consequence of another account’s status. Resolve the account that carries the actual cause and the reason for the second restriction goes with it.

Can I sell on a friend’s account instead?

That puts their account in the position yours is in, and it is the clearest possible example of using another account to avoid a consequence. Sellers who try it commonly end up explaining two restrictions rather than one.

Does this apply to buying as well as selling?

Yes. eBay frames the rule around buying and selling restrictions together, and expects buyer and seller standards to be met across all your accounts.

How long does a linked account appeal take?

eBay publishes no timeframe for any appeal, so the honest answer depends on what it must check. Our guide to how long an eBay reinstatement takes sets out two documented cases with the eBay messages attached.

When should I bring in help?

When two accounts are down and you cannot establish which one carries the cause, because guessing wrong costs a submission and a fortnight. That diagnosis is where our account recovery service starts.

One Account at a Time

A linked account restriction feels like collective punishment, and it reads like one in the notice.

First, find the account that carries a stated cause rather than a stated connection.

Second, stop trading on the other one, however wrong that feels.

Third, decide whether you are disputing the link or the restriction, and send only that.

The policy is short, published and unusually specific about the remedy. Most sellers argue with the part that was never in dispute.
