How to Raise eBay Selling Limits (And Why a Limit Is Not a Restriction)

Blog cover for how to raise eBay selling limits, showing a monthly limit rising in steps beside a limit and restriction comparison

You went to list your eleventh item, and eBay stopped you.

No notice arrived. No policy was named. The listing simply would not go live.

That is a selling limit, and it is the least alarming thing on this list.

One UK seller whose case we documented had a limit of 28,000 items a month and still could not sell a single thing, because a limit and a restriction are different animals entirely.

Knowing which one you have decides whether you write anything at all. Our eBay restriction identifier separates a selling limit from an actual restriction, which is worth doing before you open a support ticket.

Key Takeaways

  • eBay selling limits are a growth control, not a penalty. eBay describes them as helping you grow “in a manageable way” while keeping service standards intact.
  • A limit lets you sell. A restriction does not. If you can still list, just not more, nothing is wrong with your account.
  • eBay reviews limits every month automatically. Adjustments follow your sales volume and the feedback buyers leave.
  • Active and sold listings both count. Sellers routinely forget the sold half and then cannot work out where their allowance went.
  • Good Til Cancelled listings count too. They will not renew automatically once you have hit your maximum.
  • Free listings do not exempt you. eBay states limits still apply even when you have free listings remaining.
  • Shop subscribers are not automatically exempt. eBay states limits may also apply to shop subscribers.
  • Listings over the limit can be ended. You can list them again when the monthly allowance renews.
  • eBay messages you as you approach the ceiling. You can request an increase directly from inside that message.
  • Category limits are separate and usually temporary. Most are removed automatically once you have a track record in that category.
  • Never list in the wrong category to dodge a limit. eBay states that this violates its search and browse manipulation policy.
  • A second, established account can lift you. eBay lets some sellers raise limits by linking to a more established account of their own.

What Are eBay Selling Limits?

A cap on how much you can list and sell in a calendar month.

eBay states they exist “to help you grow your business in a manageable way and ensure you can give your buyers great service”, and that as you get more comfortable meeting demand, it will increase the limit.

That sentence is doing a lot of work. The limit is tied to demonstrated service, not to trust in the abstract.

Both quotes come from the eBay selling limits policy.

Where to find your actual number

Seller Hub, Overview tab, Monthly limits section.

Look before you assume. Sellers frequently describe themselves as limited when the ceiling is nowhere near where they think it is.

The number is usually expressed as a quantity limit, a total value, or both. An item limit and a value limit can run together, and both sit at account level. Category limits are separate from these account limits.

Is It a Limit, a Restriction or a Suspension?

Answer one question: can you still list at all?

If you can list but not beyond a ceiling, that is a limit and nothing has gone wrong. If you cannot list anything, something has been applied to the account and there will be a message explaining it.

Those two situations need completely different responses, and confusing them wastes the only thing that matters in the second case, which is time.

The tell in the notice

Limits arrive quietly. Restrictions arrive in writing.

eBay sends an email to your registered address and to eBay Messages when it restricts an account, explaining why and what to do. A limit produces no such notice, because there is nothing to explain.

If your Messages are empty, you are almost certainly looking at a ceiling rather than a problem. Our guide to every eBay restriction type and how each one is lifted covers the other direction.

Key point: a high limit and a live restriction can coexist on the same account. One UK seller we recovered was told she could sell 28,000 items or £187,174.78 a month in the same message that froze her payouts. Read the allowance as an allowance, never as evidence that the account is healthy.

What Counts Towards Your eBay Monthly Selling Limit?

More than sellers expect, which is why the allowance disappears faster than the listing count suggests.

eBay states plainly that your active and sold listings both count towards the monthly limit. Selling something does not free up the slot it occupied.

That single detail explains most of the confused messages we get about eBay selling limits.

The allowance

Three things fill your limit and three things do not release it

Active and sold listings both count against the same ceiling.

Every item is quoted or paraphrased from the eBay selling limits policy.

Good Til Cancelled listings are included

They count, and they stop renewing once you are at the ceiling.

eBay states that Good Til Cancelled listings count towards your selling limits and will not renew automatically if you have reached your maximum. A catalogue that quietly stops renewing looks exactly like a catalogue that stopped selling.

Check the ceiling before you start diagnosing a traffic problem.

Free listings do not buy you an exemption

The two allowances are unrelated, and eBay says so directly.

Selling limits still apply even when you have free listings remaining, and eBay states they may also apply to shop subscribers. Paying for a shop does not remove the ceiling by itself.

Two different meters, running at the same time.

What happens if you go over

eBay may end the listings you created above the limit.

The policy is reassuring about it: you can list them again when your monthly allowance renews, or if you receive an increase in the amount you can sell.

Ended is not the same as deleted, but it is not free either, because a relisted item starts its history again.

How Does eBay Decide to Raise Your Limit?

Automatically, once a month, on evidence you have already produced.

eBay states it reviews your account every month and adjusts limits automatically based on your volume of sales and the feedback you have received from buyers.

So the lever is not persuasion. It is trading well and letting the review find it.

The cycle

Limits move on eBay’s calendar, not on your request

The two inputs you actually control

Sales volume and buyer satisfaction, in that order of visibility.

Selling into your ceiling matters more than listing up to it, because eBay is reading completed transactions rather than optimism. A seller at 200 listings and 4 sales looks smaller than a seller at 40 listings and 38 sales.

Feedback is the other half, and it is the half that decays fastest when despatch slips.

What the review readsMoves the ceiling upMoves it down
Sales volumeCompleted sales risingA quiet trading month
Buyer feedbackPositive and recentNegatives and low ratings
Performance metricsAbove Standard or betterA Below Standard evaluation
Category recordOrders fulfilled cleanlyBeing new to the category

Performance metrics sit underneath both

eBay states that if your selling performance and sales metrics are strong, you may be able to have your limits increased.

Which means the defect rate you have been ignoring is also a growth constraint, not just an account health one. A Below Standard account can see limits decrease rather than increase.

Our guide to transaction defect rate removal covers what eBay will take back off, and one Australian account we manage reached 0.00% on every standards metric doing exactly that.

How Do You Request a Selling Limit Increase?

Wait for the message, then ask from inside it.

eBay states that when you are getting close to your monthly limit it will send you a message, and that you can request an increase directly from within that message.

Asking through that route puts the request in front of the process built for it. eBay also carries a Request a limit increase button on its selling limits page. Sellers often call this asking eBay to request to list more, which is the same thing under a different name.

What eBay may ask for

Contact or business details, according to the policy.

Have them ready and matching what is already on the account, because a mismatch here can turn a routine increase request into an account verification exercise. Sellers on a business account should expect eBay to check the registered company details too. We cover that scenario in clearing an eBay account verification hold.

Consistency costs nothing and saves a fortnight.

Linking an established account

This one is legitimate, and sellers confuse it with something that is not.

eBay states that if you have more than one seller account, you may be able to raise limits by linking to your other, more established account. The option appears when you select Request higher selling limits in the monthly selling limits section.

That is eBay inviting you to connect accounts you already own. It is not the same as opening a new account to escape a problem, which is the fastest way to lose both.

Worth knowing: linking accounts on eBay’s invitation is a feature. Registering a second account while the first is restricted is a policy problem. Same mechanism, opposite outcomes, and only the timing separates them.

What Are Category Selling Limits?

A separate ceiling that applies only inside a category you are new to.

eBay states that if you are new to selling in a particular category it might limit how much you can sell there, so you can manage inventory and learn any rules specific to that category.

Most of them remove themselves. eBay says that once you are comfortable fulfilling orders and have a good track record, most specific category limits will automatically be removed.

The mistake that turns a limit into a violation

Listing in a different category to get around the ceiling.

eBay addresses this directly, stating that items should always be listed in the correct category and that listing elsewhere to dodge a category limit violates its search and browse manipulation policy.

So a temporary, self-removing ceiling becomes a policy breach on an account that had nothing wrong with it. That is a genuinely bad trade.

It also hurts placement, since category choice decides which searches a listing is eligible for at all. Our eBay listing optimization guide covers that side.

Six Moves That Actually Raise eBay Selling Limits

Work in this order, because the later ones depend on the earlier ones being true.

  1. Read the real number in Seller Hub. Overview tab, Monthly limits. Half the sellers who tell us they are capped are not near the cap.
  2. Sell into the ceiling rather than listing into it. eBay adjusts limits on sales volume, so 40 listings that sell beat 200 that sit.
  3. Protect the feedback the review reads. Despatch inside your stated handling time and answer buyer messages the same day.
  4. Clear defects before the monthly review, not after. Strong performance metrics are what eBay names as the route to an increase.
  5. Request the increase from eBay’s own message. Have contact and business details ready and matching the account exactly.
  6. Link an established account if you genuinely have one. Only your own, and only through the option eBay offers you.

None of that is clever. All of it is what the review is actually measuring.

Do the arithmetic once: if the review runs monthly and your sell-through is the input, a month spent listing aggressively and shipping slowly can lower your ceiling rather than raise it. The safest growth pattern is a smaller catalogue turning over cleanly, repeated.

Why Did My Selling Limit Go Down?

Because the same monthly review that raises limits can lower them.

eBay adjusts automatically in both directions based on sales volume and feedback, so a quiet month or a run of poor buyer experiences moves the number the wrong way.

There is also a harder version. eBay states that directly after a Below Standard evaluation, “your selling limits may decrease”, alongside lower placement in Best Match and a block on Promoted Listings.

That quote is from the eBay seller standards policy.

Which version you are in

Check your seller level on the dashboard.

Above Standard with a smaller limit is an ordinary monthly adjustment and it reverses with trading. Below Standard with a smaller limit is a penalty, and it reverses when the level does, at a future evaluation.

Those two look identical in the Seller Hub number and need completely different work. We set out the second case in rebuilding the signals that decide placement.

What Happens to Selling Limits After a Restriction Is Lifted?

They usually sit still, and then move the wrong way a month later.

This catches sellers who have just fought their way back onto the platform and reasonably expect the worst to be behind them.

The quiet month problem

A restriction produces a month with almost no completed sales.

The next automatic review reads that month exactly as it reads any other quiet month, because eBay adjusts selling limits on sales volume and feedback rather than on context. Nothing in the policy carves out time lost to a restriction.

So the ceiling can fall in the first full month back, on evidence created while you were not allowed to trade.

That is not a second penalty. It is the same automatic process, reading a gap it has no way to interpret.

What to do about it

Trade into the ceiling deliberately in the first weeks back, even at lower margin.

Completed transactions with clean despatch are the only input the review can see, so a smaller number of items turning over quickly rebuilds the limit faster than a large catalogue sitting unsold.

Do not fill the allowance with stock you cannot ship inside your handling time. A second wave of late despatches during recovery lowers selling limits and seller level together.

Pro tip: if a verification hold cleared rather than a performance restriction, your selling limits were probably never the issue. Check the number before assuming it moved, because sellers routinely attribute a normal ceiling to a restriction that had nothing to do with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does eBay review selling limits?

Every month, automatically, based on your sales volume and the feedback buyers have left. Treat it as a cycle of roughly 30 days rather than something you can hurry. That review runs whether or not you ask for anything, which is why trading well is a more reliable route to a higher ceiling than any request you could write.

Why can I only list 10 items on eBay?

A new seller starts with a modest ceiling while eBay has no track record to work from, and that ceiling covers active and sold listings together. It moves as you complete transactions cleanly, so the fastest route up is selling the ten rather than trying to list an eleventh.

Do sold items free up my selling limit?

No, and this is the single most misunderstood part of the policy. eBay states that active and sold listings both count towards your monthly limit, so a sale does not return the slot until the allowance renews.

Does an eBay shop subscription remove selling limits?

Not automatically. eBay states that selling limits may also apply to shop subscribers, and that limits still apply even where free listings remain, so the two allowances run independently of each other.

What happens to listings created over the limit?

eBay may end them, and states you can list them again when your monthly allowance renews or if you receive an increase. Ending is recoverable, but the relisted item starts its selling history from scratch, so it is not entirely free.

Can I have a limit and a suspension at the same time?

Yes, and one of our documented cases shows exactly that, with a large monthly allowance sitting in the same notice that froze the account’s payouts. The full timeline is on the MC011 suspension removal case study.

How long do category limits last?

Usually until you have a track record in that category, since eBay states most specific category limits are removed automatically once you are fulfilling orders comfortably and following the category rules. Some categories keep their own limits regardless, so a remaining cap is not necessarily a sign of a problem.

Can I list in another category to get around a limit?

No. eBay states that doing so violates its search and browse manipulation policy, which converts a temporary and self-removing ceiling into an actual policy breach on your account.

Will opening a second account raise my limits?

Linking an established account you already own can, through the option eBay offers in the selling limits section. Registering a brand new account to escape a ceiling is a different thing entirely and risks both accounts, which we cover in why most eBay appeals fail and in the MC999 suspension guide.

Do selling limits affect my search placement?

Not directly, because a limit caps volume rather than visibility. Indirectly it matters a great deal, since fewer live listings means fewer chances to appear, and the performance metrics that lift your limit are the same ones Best Match reads.

Should I pay to have my limits raised?

No, and be wary of anyone selling that service, because the review is automatic and driven by your own trading record. What is worth paying for is fixing the metrics underneath it, which is a different job with a measurable outcome.

My limit dropped and I did nothing wrong. Why?

A quiet trading month can lower the ceiling on its own, since the monthly review adjusts in both directions. If your seller level also dropped to Below Standard then the decrease is a penalty rather than an adjustment, and our account recovery service handles that version.

Grow Into the Ceiling

Sellers spend weeks trying to argue their way past a limit that a good month would have lifted on its own.

First, open Seller Hub and read the actual number. Confirm you are genuinely at the ceiling before treating it as the problem.

Second, check eBay Messages. An empty inbox means a limit. A notice means something else entirely, and that changes what you do today.

Third, sell what you already have listed, despatch it inside your handling time, and let the monthly review find the evidence.

Then ask, from the message eBay sends you, with your details matching the account.

Two things to settle before you contact anyone about a limit.

First, work out whether you are actually at the cap or simply out of stock in the listings that sell. Sellers regularly report a limit problem that turns out to be an inventory one.

Second, check your performance before you ask for more room. A request lands better on an account that is meeting the standards than on one that is drifting.

Worth holding on to: a limit is throttling rather than punishment. Treating it as enforcement is how a routine cap turns into a support ticket that draws attention you did not need.
